Dog Training

Took some time off during lunch yesterday to visit the bookstore, thinking of getting a book on dog training. I browsed through the small collection of dog books which were available and as I repeated the titles to myself, I was mildly amused. "How to speak to your dog", "Communicating with your dog", "Reading your dog's mind", ... these were some of the titles! I felt I could be regarded as a little neurotic trying to learn a 3rd language talking to dogs and mastering dog psychology too.

More ironically, in the 9 years that I have been having a dog, I never read a single book about dog training or dog behaviour. Now that my pet dog is a senior, I am learning to retrain him like a puppy. The truth is it took me a long time to realise that training a dog is not just about "sit", "stay", "no"... essentially obeying basic commands. It is about helping dogs achieve a balanced state of mind (I borrowed that from the Dog Whisperer). Since there is not a "one size fits all" solution, being balanced is the only way to have assurance that dogs can remain calm when confronted with different challenges and situations. With a reliably trained dog, we can then look forward to truly rewarding experience from dog ownership.

In the last 6 months, I spent most of my free evenings training my dog. He is generally nice but had suffered from the "Napoleon Syndrome", i.e. small dog with big ego. We spent half an hour walking everyday, repeatedly performed basic commands such as "sit" and "down", also confronting objects he feared in the past. All these were done to re-establish myself as his "pack leader". Overall, we have had much success with the training, although I have not been able to correct some of his undesirable behaviour. So it is still "work-in-progress" and I think it always will be until I start howling...

Cowboy's 8th birthday

Cowboy is 8!

This year, the birthday celebration was a simple affair. Even the cake has shrunk in size, although partly compensated by increase in the count of cheese cakes to 2.

Hmm... why my cake so small this time?

Never mind, tuck in!

And a very special birthday song sung by Malcolm didi... so cute!

I wish good health for Cowboy and many more years of cheese cakes to come.

Dog sitter's diary

After weeks of jetsetting, I am glad to be home finally with no outstanding travelling commitments. While being homebound, I am entrusted with the task of being dog-sitter for a week. Dad and Mum have gone on vacation in Japan, and even sis is away in Europe. So it's just me and the dogs spending some one-on-one time together in the next few days.

With 2 dogs at home, it is like having a leaking faucet. Clearing their excretion becomes almost a full time job. On top of that is the preparation of gourmet meals of lamb and vegetables twice a day for the 2 connoisseurs. Plus brushing and grooming them, it is all the time I have in one evening.

At 7am, both dogs have hearty appetite.

Cowboy is obviously quite interested in the toasts.

As I watch the dogs doze off by the balcony while basking in the mild morning sun and light breeze, I am contented to have them in my company when my family is away. I am thankful that these creatures are created, for they are truly man's best friends.

Looking great after returning from the groomer's.

Cowboy's 7th birthday

If there is one day in a year I wouldn't be absent, it is today. Cowboy turns 7!

This year, mum, dad and sis celebrated his birthday together.

Cowboy's pick on the favourite cheese cake of all time. Same cake as in the past but with more candles this year.

Cowboy is all smiley though he kept a safe distance from the cake with lit candles, as if aware of the fire hazard.

Dig in! His favourite part.

Hope he will stay healthy and cute all the time.

Wet and wild

Mummy's point and shoot camera is back from loan. I smell trouble... she's going to make me pose in all her silly photos again!

What's the big deal about taking a bath? Haven't you seen a 帅哥"let down his hair" before?

Wet and wild! Sexy? Not quite...

I'm smiling because I'm making a“洗头妹”out of my Mummy.

Going to relax for a while. Wake me up when I'm done.

Thanks to this 3 speed, 3 temperature hair dryer with ion care , I get the maximum air at lowest temperature, free from static. Cozy.

Ooo... enjoying the "breeze"; How comfortable.

Almost there... before the final touch.

White and fluffy once again.

Hair loss.. sign of old age!

Sorry to all the uncles, aunties and 弟弟、妹妹 who came to our house yesterday. I smelled like rotten cheese. That wasn't my usual self.

Today I'm

Happy Birthday to Cowboy!

It seems like yesterday when I blew out the candle on Cowboy's 5th birthday cake. Today he turns 6.

I still remember the first day he came to me... a puppy only slightly bigger than my palm. It was easy to bathe him as he could fit in the wash basin. So small and frail back then he was, but now strong and healthy. I have enjoyed every minute watching him grow up.

Cowboy ready for the party! Check out his new bunny look.

He was jolly and gay all morning; maybe he knew today is his special day.

Munching into his cheese cake, an all time favourite and licking his nose afterwards.

Now, isn't this a happy and contented look?

Still puppy-ish and as lovable as ever, even though he has entered mid-life in human equivalent age.

Happy birthday to Cowboy, my most loyal friend!

Cowboy's day out!

For some strange reason, mummy loves this warm and humid season. She says the sunshine brings vitality to life and even the clouds are joyous with colours. I don't pretend I know what exactly she meant, but I am high spirited and ready for some summer time fun too!

It's been a long time since I've been to the park. Mummy didn't approve because I have to take care of my flowing long hair. "Stay in bed. Grow hair. Give Peace a Chance" (quote from Lennon). Mummy is trying to make me into a hippy.

So this is my big break! I ran, ran and ran. I want to break free, but how to do so when I am on a leash?

As I wandered along, I saw this tall tree. Yes, this may be the legendary "Jack and the Beanstalk". But where's Jack?

Jack, Jacky, you home??!!

There you are, Jack! Come down now, yoo hoo!

Never mind, I am sick and tired of you Jack, you arrogant little black bird. Let me take a sip of water and quench my thirst.

So much adventure for today. Now I am back to my "cage", would you please leave me alone? May I have some privacy please.
