(Sodagreen)

In times of despair, pray to the stars.

我爱天上的明星;

我也曾尝味,我也曾容忍;

Beatlemania

I've asked myself many times which is my favourite Beatles song. But it is simply too hard to decide because the band has mostly marvellous pieces.

People often say that there is a Beatles song for every ocassion. It is true indeed. When your car is hit by a cowardly hit and run driver at the carpark, you tell yourself "Let it be". For my friends who have to work till wee hours at month end closing, I dedicate the song "8 Days a week" especially to them. Where to go for vacation? How about "Back in the USSR"? And on Saturday evenings while you wait impatiently in front of the radio for the 4D results to be announced, your heart is singing "Please Please me".

The Beatles at Cavern Club

Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Sir Paul McCartney

The Beatlemania on tour, that's about the closest I'll ever get to watching a live "Beatles" performance. 4 impersonating artists performed hit songs from The Beatles at the Esplanade Theatre tonight. Although they obviously lack the charms and charisma of the orignal Beatles members, they did their trade pretty well. Minus the personality aspects, The Beatles are still the greatest! Their songs move hearts, if not, at least the butts, as more than half the audience in Esplanade were on their feet by the end of the concert.

As I looked at footages from the 60s of fanatic Beatles fans on the screen, I began to wonder how it will be for me 20 years down the road, who will be the one standing beside me and if Mayday will still be performing my favourite songs... Perhaps I will no longer have the stamina to stand throughout a 3 hour concert, but you can count on it that I'll still be screaming!!!

#9 Dream

Feeling a little melancholy tonight as I mourn on the death anniversary of a great musician. John Winston Lennon was shot 4 times on his back and shoulder on this day in 1980. As the bullets burst his aorta, the dreams of love and peace of many were broken. It is doubtful that the world would become more peaceful and that there would be less war if he had lived, but we certainly have been deprived of greater works and ingenuity from this man.

Lovely, lovely poem and beautifully translated by 徐志摩. I could weep everytime I read it.

Song
by Christina Georgina Rossetti

When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree.
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.

I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on as if in pain.
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.

Wise Men In Their Bad Hours

Robinson Jeffers

Wise men in their bad hours have envied
The little people making merry like grasshoppers
In spots of sunlight, hardly thinking
Backward but never forward, and if they somehow
Take hold upon the future they do it
Half asleep, with the tools of generation
Foolishly reduplicating
Folly in thirty-year periods; they eat and laugh too,
Groan against labors, wars and partings,
Dance, talk, dress and undress; wise men have pretended
The summer insects enviable;
One must indulge the wise in moments of mockery.
Strength and desire possess the future,
The breed of the grasshopper shrills, "What does the future
Matter, we shall be dead?" Ah, grasshoppers,
Death's a fierce meadowlark: but to die having made
Something more equal to the centuries
Than muscle and bone, is mostly to shed weakness.
The mountains are dead stone, the people
Admire or hate their stature, their insolent quietness,
The mountains are not softened nor troubled
And a few dead men's thoughts have the same temper.

* * * *

Are we fools by the way we live?
Not for the past, the future only the present.
Like the wise men in their bad hours.
Leaving behind not a dead stone,
More like dust and ashes.

Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix

Song from the opera, Samson and Delilah, known in English as "Softly awakes my heart".

Literally translated as "My heart opens itself to your voice". If only I can hear your voice once again...

Original French

Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix,
comme s'ouvrent les fleurs
Aux baiser de l'aurore!
Mais, ô mon bienaimé,
pour mieux sécher mes pleurs
Que ta voix parle encore!
Dis-moi qu'à Dalila
tu reviens pour jamais,
Redis à ma tendresse
Les serments d'autrefois,
ces serments que j'aimais!
Ah! réponds à ma tendresse!
Verse-moi,verse-moi l'ivresse!

Ainsi qu'on voit des blés
les épis onduler
Sous la brise légère,
Ainsi frémit mon coeur,
prêt à se consoler,
A ta voix qui m'est chère!
La flèche est moins rapide
à porter le trépas,
Que ne l'est ton amante
à voler dans tes bras!
Ah! réponds à ma tendresse!
Verse-moi,verse-moi l'ivresse!

English Translation

My heart opens itself to your voice
like the flowers open
To the kisses of the dawn!
But, o my beloved,
To dry my tears the best,
Let your voice speak again!
Tell me that to Dalila
You will return forever,
Repeat to my tenderness
The oaths of other times,
the oaths that I loved!
Ah! respond to my tenderness!
Pour out to me the drunkenness!

Like one sees the wheat
the blades undulate
Under the light breeze,
So trembles my heart,
ready to be consoled,
by your voice which is dear to me!
The arrow is less quick
to carry death,
Than is your love
to fly into thy arms!
Ah! respond to my tenderness!
Pour out to me the drunkenness!

Hope meets despair in equal measure

An exerpt from the book I am reading, "Six Months in Sudan" by James Maskalyk, a Canadian doctor who was with the Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders), and has worked in a war torn village in Sudan. Here are bits of the harsh reality of his work and how this experience has changed him.

Sometimes, I really marvel at human compassion. For humanitarian reasons, some people travelled distances, to places infested with diseases and threatened by wars. It is not that they are unafraid, but are convinced of the worthiness of their pursue.

As the author puts it, "Some of the work in repairing the world is grim; much of it is not. Hope not only meets despair in equal measure, it drowns it." I would like to think that the world is full of hope and a caring place too.

I salute these heros!

* * * * *

"He is talking about an acquaintance, a nurse, who worked during an Ebola outbreak in the Congo years before. He recounts her story of how, after days of watching people die of the incurable virus, she and her team decided that if there was nothing to offer those infected, no treatement, no respite, they would give them a bath. They put on goggles and masks, taped their gloves to their gowns, and cleaned their sick patients.

...I heard ten seconds of a story, and during them realised there were things I had not reckoned on.

It was the taping of the gloves. The whine of the white tape as it stretched around their wrists, forming a seal between their world and the bleeding one in front of them. I could imagine the grimness with which it was done, could see the flat faces of the doctors and nurses as they stepped into the room.

I rewound to a film loop of me kneeling on the dirt floor of the long hut we had build out of wood and grass to accomodate the surge of infected people. I was kneeling beside the bed of an infant who was feverish and had stopped drinking. I was trying, with another doctor to find a vein. The baby's mother sat helpless on the bed as we poked holes in her child. She was crying. She wanted us to stop. Small pearls of blood dotted his neck, his groin. We failed, his breathing worsened, and he died. I stood up, threw the needles in the sharps container, and walked away to attend someone else. Behind me his mother wailed. I can see my flat face.

People who do this type of work talk about the rupture we feel on our return, an irreconcilable invisible distance between us and others. We talk about how difficult it is to assimilate, to assume routine, to sample familiar pleasures. Though I could convince myself that the fissure was narrow enough to be ignored, it only took a glance to see how dizzyingly deep it was.

The rift, of course, is not in the world: it is within us. And the distance is not only ours. We return from the field, from an Ebola outbreak or violent clashes in Sudan, with no mistake about how the world is. It is a hard place - a beautiful place, but so too an urgent one. And we realise that all of us, through our actions or inactions, make it what it is...

... I believe that which separates action from inaction is the same thing that separates my friends from Sudan. It is not indifference. It is distance. May it fall away."

Bizarre memory

I have a bizarre memory relating to this song.

Many years ago, it was so long ago that I have forgotten which year it was, a guy confessed in me. He was in love with a woman, but the trouble was, he was married to another.

I did what a loyal friend would do... I listened. Listened to his happiness, his anguish, his guilt and confusion. It seemed that he knew he should not carry on an illegitimate relationship, but was unable to stop.

The radio played this song and we were silent. He dropped his head down and kept his hands busy, pretending to be engaged with something which I cannot remember what. Maybe he was avoiding further conversation. I took one glance at him, afraid that he would look back because I would then be lost for words to say. The air was so tensed, nearly suffocating. I sensed the emotional turbulence going through in his heart and at that very moment, it was as if I could feel every inch of the pain that he felt. That man was helplessness in a tangible form.

I told him to follow his heart. Now that I look back, it was one lousy advice to give. Moral value wise, I scored zero. It was better that I had said nothing, for who am I to comment about matters of heart? And men, they are strange creatures to start off with. They have so many desires but carelessly have little to give in return. Their world is in a constant state of impermanence; so fickle and mutable are their characteristics. No offense guys, I just don't understand. Yet, I have willingly fallen victim to you.

The last I heard, he was expecting a baby with his wife. Whether he has sort out his thoughts or is merely submitting to reality, I do not know. Whichever the case, I hope he is happy now. That is what choices in life should be based on.

Miss Sarajevo

Is there a right time for the right thing?
Is there one time for only one thing?

Or differences will always co-exist?
That they can all happen simultaneously.

Miss Sarajevo, the soundtrack from a short film of the same title. A film about a real life beauty pageant that was held in the midst of civil war in Bosnia in 1993. Such a great contrast that the most beautiful thrives amidst the ugliest, through tunnels and behind cellar. It depicts the fact that life goes on, despite all the turmoil and unrest, despite the indifference and helplessness from the rest of the world.

Perhaps, there is never a right time for anything; or everything is equally right at anytime. And if there should be a time for everything, would that mean peace?

War destroys beautiful things, not just beauty queens, but everything else that is beautiful. It destroys meaning, destroys hopes and dreams, destroy you and me.

"Don't let them kill us"... I share the same appeal as the beauty queens. Don't let war destroy all that are beautiful.

Miss Sarajevo
From the incredible union of U2 & Pavarotti

Is there a time for keeping your distance
A time to turn your eyes away
Is there a time for keeping your head down
For getting on with your day

Is there a time for kohl and lipstick
A time for curling hair
Is there a time for high street shopping
To find the right dress to wear

Here she comes
Heads turn around
Here she comes
To take her crown

Is there a time to run for cover
A time for kiss and tell
Is there a time for different colours
Different names you find it hard to spell

Is there a time for first communion
A time for East Seventeen
Is there a time to turn to Mecca
Is there time to be a beauty queen

Here she comes
Beauty plays the clown
Here she comes
Surreal in her crown

Dici che il fiume
Trova la via al mare
E come il fiume
Giungerai a me
Oltre i confini
E le terre assetate
Dici che come il fiume
Come il fiume...
L'amore giungerà
L'amore...
E non so più pregare
E nell'amore non so più sperare
E quell'amore non so più aspettare

[Translation of the above]
You say that the river
finds the way to the sea
and like the river
you will come to me
beyond the borders
and the dry lands
You say that like a river
like a river...
the love will come
the love...
And i don't know how to pray anymore
and in love i don't know how to hope anymore
and for that love i don't know how to wait anymore

[End of Translation]

Is there a time for tying ribbons
A time for Christmas trees
Is there a time for laying tables
And the night is set to freeze

A song for 同志

A song that I've liked for a long time, but I never fully understood the meaning of it until I came to know that it was originally written as a 同志(gay) song.

The version that we frequently hear today has some parts of the lyrics re-written to "fit" a commercial album. The original version, while probably controversial is subtly beautiful.

First version in 1998 sung by 小平 and included in 《拥抱 同志专辑》
Later version in 1999 performed by 五月天 and included in their first album 五月天第一张创作专辑

Please enjoy both versions.

Beautiful acoustic. Singer has a great voice.

From their first concert. The singing part ain't great, but it's such a pretty sight to have 4 of them sit in a row strumming their guitars. Rarely get to see these days.

I didn't invent that, 阿信 did.

* * * *

Someone told me that in this season when nights are cold, people feel lonely a lot. He says that the sight of fallen leaves are unbearable, because of the emptiness it stirs up in the heart.

Those who tried to explain the feeling of loneliness are fools. How do you visualise a void? How would you grapple a heart with regrets? How could you scream out loud without being heard? For those who understood, it means no more than the word. For those who don't, they won't have a clue even if a book is written.

The autumn wind is cruel. Leaves fall, flowers wither, passion turns cold... constantly reminding one that all good things are ending. It is a depressing time, as if the world is dying. There ain't much more to anticipate, except for the bitter winter snow and days without warm sunlight.

Fortunately for season's change, spring will come once more and bring new hopes. But in life, seasons do not repeat. What is missed will be missed forever, what is lost will never be found. Life stories are not to be rewritten...

Which season in life are you at? I think I am in summer, like the weather in the little isle which I live. Regrets may be too early to recollect, but I hope there won't be plenty.

Or listen to song here

We almost forgot him!

He was the greatest joke of that time. Me and colleagues used to mimic him on those nights when we were so tired from work. Yet I almost forgot his name. But he earned a page in Wikipedia and released 3 albums. Not bad for a dude like him.

Rumour has it that he died of heroin overdose. True or false? I don't know.

It's still funny watching this clip now. Enjoy!

Say "Yes"...

What would it take for you to say "Yes"?

100 red roses?
1 carat diamond ring?
A romantic marriage proposal on top of Eiffel Tower?

This is a video clip of a very touching proposal. Give yourself 10 min to finish the clip, I hope you will enjoy it. Ming(冠佑)is the drummer of 五月天 and the proposal took place during the band's concert in Beijing. His wife is really a lucky woman.

Then, after the most perfect marriage proposal and the grandest wedding, what lies ahead is a long and diffcult journey that no one can foretell. Like I always say, marriage is a lifelong battle, I have never thought it to be easy, yet I did not imagine it could be so tough at times. At the altar, when you say "I do", do you really understand what you have got yourself into? And this sacred vow that has been broken time and time again by so many, does it still count? Well, doesn't matter what I think, life is a struggle anyway. Nothing is easy in life.

Linkin Park in concert (13 Nov 2007)

"Up your volume by 3 notch." That's what I told people I met after I came out of Linkin Park's concert yesterday. For many hours I couldn't hear properly as I was almost deafen by the loud music from LP. They were great and it's incredible to watch them perform live!

Chester, lead singer. Great voice, lousy attitude. Haha... but he's still my favourite LP!

Oh Mike, oh my, looking great with his guitar. I love his rapping too.

Chester and Mike are my favourites.

The organiser of the concert suck big time though. Entrance to the stadium was not properly managed and there were little or no signage to indicate the directions. The queue was horrible (I think admission started too late) and fans were only fully admitted by 9pm, when the concert was scheduled to start at 8pm. Is that why the concert was so short?

It was the shortest concert I have ever been to, only lasted for 1.5 hours. By 10.30pm, LP was already done. And I couldn't believe they only sang 1 encore song (though it was my recent favourite, "Bleed it out" from Minutes to Midnight)!

In comparison, Mayday's concert was so much more value for money. They sang for 3 hours and there were 2 guest appearances (actually I rather not have them if the band can sing more songs). And fans of Mayday were civilised, unlike LP's who pushed and knocked others a lot.

Ok, ok, here's the mathematics. Mayday has 6 albums, LP has 3. That's why the concert time is reduced by half. Logical? Bull shit!

Linkin Park! Are they not cool?? Drool....

I am truly amazed that LP has so many fans here and many of them were so wild! They could sing to LP's every song and had the energy to jump all night... so very very high! Erm, but that also reminded me of myself several weeks ago when I was standing on the chair in Shanghai Stadium. No wonder at that time I kept feeling that the other fans around me were so "un-high". Actually that's how normal people would behave, I was the crazy one haha!

After yesterday, it is clear that I will be the most ardent fan only to Mayday, and LP, unfortunately, will always remain second.

Having said all that, I still think LP is a great band! They are less "angry" as compared to the other rock bands. That's what I love about them... come on, we are all civilised people, don't have to swear all the time.

P.S. Photos are downloaded from this website and not taken by me... don't you know you are not suppose to bring cameras into concerts? Flashes distract the performers! And respect IP please!

* * * * *
